About Afterboard
A small, independent viewer for the Adobe XD files people still receive.
Who makes it
Afterboard is made by ALGD LTD, a company registered in Northern Ireland (NI744090). Email hello@afterboard.app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Adobe.
How it reads XD files
An .xd file is a ZIP package of JSON: a manifest, one “graphics tree” per artboard, shared resources (components, gradients, colour and character styles) and the embedded pictures. Adobe hasn’t published the format. Afterboard’s reader and renderer were written for it from the structure of openly licensed sample files, with the open-source xd2svg (MIT, Andrey Chalkin) and xdtools (MIT, Umar Ahmed) projects read for reference; no code was copied from them. The file is unpacked with your browser’s own ZIP decompression in a background worker, and each artboard is drawn as SVG.
It was tested against openly licensed designs from GitHub: the XD to Flutter plugin’s test suite (BSD-2-Clause), xd2svg’s test files (MIT), AkyuiUnity’s samples (MIT), awesome-flutter-ui (MIT), Bootstrap grid templates (MIT), Covid19Radar (MPL-2.0), Dezenix website screens (CC0) and LogoS (CC0), comparing each render with the preview XD saved inside the file. Design files are endlessly varied, so if something looks wrong, XD itself is the reference; the page lists what it drew approximately for each file.
